J. W. Ratcliff

J.W. Ratcliff, 91, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023, at 91 years old, when he went home to be with his Lord. Though he lived and accumulated nine decades of life experiences and adventures, he always remained youthful at heart. Whether he was riding a bicycle backwards down the beach at 55, or going backwards down the water slides at 70, he never failed to have a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He was an immensely compassionate man, full of empathy for others and a big heart for animals. He even befriended squirrels, foxes, and skunks amongst his animal companions. He was very tender hearted, never hesitating to lend a helping hand to others. Some of his sweetness could possibly be attributed to his fondness for apple pie, birthday cake, and peaches that he loved indulging in. J.W. Filled his life faithfully serving the Lord, praying for his loved ones, spending time on the river, hunting, and spending time with his family and friends that he loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ruby Ratcliff; a sister, Gladys Ratcliff; and two brothers, Donald Ratcliff and Hoyle Ratcliff.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ratcliff; five children, Rita Waldroup (Gene), Shirley Ratcliff, Ricky Ratcliff (Margie), Michael Ratcliff (Donna), all of Old Fort, and Ronnie Ratcliff (Brenda) of Chatsworth; ten grandchildren, Joy, Marlin, Benji, Marty, Cindy, Angie, Daniel, Nick, Michael, and Tony; and twenty great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A celebration of his life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023 in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Bishop Shane Calhoun officiating.  Interment will follow in Conasauga Baptist Church Cemetery with Benji, Marlin, Marty, Nick, Michael, and Tony serving as pallbearers.  A white dove release ceremony and the playing of bagpipes will conclude the service.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home just prior to the service.
