George Lester Hammontree, 89 of Cleveland, TN passed away Tuesday, October 11th, 2023.
George was born in Whitfield County, attended school in Bradley County and was a member of Bethel Baptist Tabernacle. He retired after many years of service with Weyerhaeuser as a machine operator and also worked as a Mechanic for Duplan. George enjoyed playing bluegrass music and was a natural talent. He learned to play guitar, fiddle, and banjo by ear. In his free time, George enjoyed fishing on Watts Bar, trips to Florida, and watching professional wrestling and old westerns. He was quiet but steadfast in his beliefs, a hard worker, and a wonderful husband and father.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Willard Hammontree and Stella Hammontree; siblings, Eugene Hammontree, Virgie Knight, and William Charles Hammontree; grandson, Randy Hammontree; and nephew, Ricky Hammontree.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Mary Sue Hammontree; children: Danny (Cathy) Hammontree and Brenda (Larry) Herzog; grandchildren: Cynthia (Ken) Lewis, Dana (Steven Jones) Hammontree, Mark Pritchett, and Stacy (April) Pritchett; great grandchildren: Austin O’Neal, Haylee Meyer, Kyleigh Hammontree, Jacob Jones, Carson Pritchett, Cole Pritchett, Emma Kate Pritchett, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 13th, 2023 from 12pm until the funeral hour at 2:30pm in the Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Exline officiating. Interment will follow in the Flint Springs Cemetery.
