David Allen Smith

September 5, 1940 — January 8, 2021

David Allen Smith, age 80, died peacefully at home in Cleveland, TN on January 8, 2021. He was born in Selma, Alabama to Annie Mae Stringer Smith and Decatur Alexander Smith and grew up there with his five brothers and sisters.

After military service, David remained in the Bay Area where he met and married his wife, Carla Ann Magoria of 57 years. He completed his BA and MA in Psychology at San Francisco State University and later did doctoral work at the University of Alabama.

David and Carla moved to Hoover, Alabama, in 1971, where they raised three sons. Once settled in Alabama, David embarked on a career at Lawson State Community College.

As a psychology instructor, he touched the lives of students for many years. As his family grew, David found himself enjoying the great outdoors and especially kayaking alongside his sons. This led to the purchase of Hiwassee Outfitters in 1983 which he owned and operated with Carla.

David was generous with his time, spending many years volunteering for Catholic Social Services, the local youth soccer association and Boy Scouts of America. He was also a member of the Alabama Education Association, the National Education Association and the American Psychological Association.

After first enjoying his retirement in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, David and Carla eventually settled in East Tennessee to be near their family.

He is predeceased by his parents and siblings: Raymond J. Cook, Faye Cook Andersen, Cookie Cook Beach, Calvin C. Cook, and Barney C. Cook.

David is survived by his three children: Carlo J. Smith (Julie) Maryville, TN, Michael D. Smith (Devona) Cleveland, TN and Stephen L. Smith (Dawn) Ocoee, TN. He is also survived by his five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren: Benjamin Smith, Daniel Smith, Sarah Smith, Addison Smith, Brant Smith, Sebastian Felicidario and Melissa West.

The family will be holding a private funeral for both David and his wife Carla.
