Willie M Cate

March 15, 1912 — January 24, 2006

Willie Gamble Moore Cate, 93, a resident of Cleveland, passed away on January 24, 2006. A native of Charleston, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late William and Mayme Moore. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Crawford Cate (Bill) and her son, William Crawford Cate, Jr., sisters: Mary Moore Cate and Gladys Moore Galloway. Mrs. Cate was a graduate of Charleston High School in 1930 and received a Teachers Certificate from Carson Newman College in 1932. While at college she played on the women?s Volleyball team. Mrs. Cate touched the lives of many young children she taught at Mayfield Elementary School. She loved her students and teaching. She recently said she would choose teaching again. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Tennessee. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church for 60 years and a member of the FEALTY Sunday School class. She served as a volunteer at Bradley Memorial Hospital for over 16 years. Mrs. Cate was a member of the Rosemary Garden Club and a collector of wildflowers. She had been known to carry a shovel in her car just in case she came across some pretty wildflowers on the side of the road. She was a longtime collector of antiques. She was a visionary when it came to her collecting. She could take an old tattered, unusable piece of furniture and with persistent hard work turn it into a beautiful piece of furniture. Mrs. Cate was very talented in handwork, knitting, crocheting and sewing. Her passion was sewing for her granddaughters when they were young. She would deliver a dozen outfits at a time to Nashville for Billy and Juanita?s little girls. Along with her husband she was an avid sports fan, especially UT. She is survived by one son, James Phillip Cate of Cleveland, three granddaughters, Shannon Cate Vick of Nashville, TN, Dana Cate Kelly and husband Dee of Ft. Worth, TX, and Molly Moore Cate of Frankfort, KY; daughter-in-law Juanita Cate of Nashville, TN; one great-grandson, William Vick and three great-granddaughters, Cate, Lynn and Camille Kelly; many loving nieces and nephews. Special friends Jim and Melba Floyd, Kris and Hannah Jones.
