Coach Randall L. Geren, 67, a resident of Decatur, passed away from injuries due to an automobile accident, Monday, December 30, 2013. He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church. He received his B.S. Degree in the class of 1969 from Lee University. He was a teacher and coach in many area school systems and retired from Cleveland High School after 30 years of teaching service.
He was known affectionately as “Coach Geren” by the many students and athletes whose lives he touched over the years. Coach Geren never met a stranger and wherever he went fun seemed to follow. He loved a good joke and to put a smile on people’s faces with his quick wit and knack for storytelling. Coach Geren also loved the water and fishing. He knew the Hiawassee River like the back of his hand. A sometimes larger than life character, possibly Coach Geren’s favorite role later in life was that of “Papaw” to his two young grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Randall and Melba Harmon Geren.
He is survived by two children: Randall Lewis Geren II of the US Army, Ft. Bliss, TX; Hollie Geren Rapello and husband, Paul of Nashville; two grandchildren: Charlotte Marie Rapello and P.J. Rapello of Nashville; two sisters: Charlotte Casteel of Cleveland; Tammy White and husband, Thomas of Smithville, TN; one nephew, Rocky Casteel of Chattanooga; two nieces: Lacey Duke and Lindsey Holmes both of Smithville.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 3, 2014, at Broad Street United Methodist Church with Pastor Randy Martin and Pastor William “Skip” White officiating. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, January 2, 2014, at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home.
