Samye Jean Phillips Sloan, 92, a resident of Cleveland passed away Monday, March 12, 2012 in a local health care facility. Samye Jean Arrants was born December 11, 1919 in Meigs County TN., the daughter of Sam and Bertha Gross Arrants. She attended Calhoun schools and graduated from Charleston High School where she was Miss Charleston and an all-state basketball player. She attended Tennessee Wesleyan College. In 1938, she married Guye Taylor Phillips. They had four children, Bill, Nancy, Gayle and Max. She was preceded in death by their oldest son, Bill and youngest daughter, Gayle as well as her parents and brothers Max and Tom Arrants. She is survived by Nancy Phillips Hilley of Orange Beach, AL and Nancy has two sons, Phillip (Jennifer) of Foley, AL and Sam of Pensacola, FL. Mrs. Sloan?s son Guye Max Phillips and his wife, Courtney live in Cleveland, TN. Their daughter, Sloane Phillips Cogdell (James) lives in Knoxville and their son, Taylor is a student at UTC. Bill?s children, Bill A. " Chip " and Mike Phillips still live in Cleveland as does their mother, Annette Hixson Phillips. Gayle?s daughter, Lauran Daugherty Walker lives with her daughter, Haley, in Orlando, Florida. Gayle?s son, Dustin Daugherty his wife, Sonya and their children, Samantha and Dalton, also live in Central Florida. Mrs. Sloan had a successful career in real estate in Cleveland from the 1950?s until the mid-1980?s. She established Phillips Real Estate in 1960. With her husband Guye, she had a construction business and built many homes designed for young families. The Phillip?s often made financing possible so young couples could buy their first home. Mr. Phillips passed away in 1968. Mrs. Phillips was instrumental in establishing the Cleveland Board of Realtors and served as their first woman president. She was also the first woman elected as director of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce. As Phillips Real Estate grew, her sons Bill and Max became partners in the business. In 1972, Samye Jean married Charles "Preacher" Sloan. In the mid 1980?s, the Sloans retired and moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fl. Mr. Sloan passed away in 2009 and Mrs. Sloan returned to Cleveland and resided at Garden Plaza until she passed away. A memorial service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Broad Street United Methodist Church with Reverend Jim Gibson officiating. Inurnment will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens following the memorial service. The family will receive friends from 2:00 ? 4:00 p.m. Friday at the church prior to the service.
