Joe D Gill

Joe D. Gill went home to be with the Lord Thursday evening, November 3, 2011 at his family residence. Joe was born in Crossett, Arkansas February 19, 1941, and was a graduate of Crossett High School. He was married to the former Carlanna Dyer from Van Buren, Arkansas with whom he recently celebrated 50 years of marriage this past August. Joe was an avid Arkansas Razerback fan for many years until moving to Cleveland, Tennessee in 1981. For the past 30 years he has been a loyal Tennessee Volunteer fan, enjoying many games with friends and family. Joe became a follower of Jesus Christ 35 years ago, and he and Carlanna have been faithful and active members at First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee since moving to Cleveland. He was a part of a Bible Study group led by Joe Washington and Doug Boring. He was dearly loved by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild and he will be missed greatly at all of the family gatherings. Joe worked in the paper industry most of his adult life, as a worker, plant manager, and eventually in sales. He was privileged to retire early, and has enjoyed spending lots of time with family and friends for the past 18 years. Joe was an 8 year lymphoma cancer survivor, and he courageously fought lung cancer for the past 4 months until the Lord released him from his battle this past Thursday night. Mr. Gill was the son of the late Luther D. Gill and Ethel Mae Bates Gill and was also preceded in death by his brother, Fred D. Gill. In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Melanie and Judge J. Michael Sharp and Dana and Dr. Jamison Work all of Cleveland, TN; four grandchildren: Sarah Sharp Wangaard and husband Elias of Birmingham, Alabama, James Matthew Sharp and fiancée Laura Whitehead of Cleveland, Joe Reid Work and Mary Kate Work both of Cleveland; one great-grandchild, Leah Caroline Wangaard; one niece, Monty Ingram of Cleveland, TN and one nephew, Kent Gill of Jacksonville, Florida. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Jamison Work and Dr. Allan Lockerman officiating. Interment will follow in Candies Creek Cemetery with Jim Smith, Joe Washington, Wayne Richardson, Eddie Cartwright, McKamy Hall, Kent Gill, Reid Work, Matt Sharp, Elias Wangaard, Dick Williams serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Doug Boring and Joe Washington Men’s Sunday School Class. His family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, November 7, 2011 at First Baptist Church. Memorial may be made to First Baptist Church Missions, PO Box 2368, Cleveland, TN 37320.
