Wayne Harold Moore, 89, a resident of Calhoun, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 06, 2011. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific which he didn’t like to talk about until his later years. He was the oldest living member of Hiwassee Baptist Church and was a member of the Hiwassee Masonic Lodge #188 F & AM and Calhoun Eastern Star Chapter 187. He retired from Bowater Paper Mill in 1983 as a pipe fitter; before working at Bowater he worked with Grinnell Company installing sprinkler systems. He was an antique collector for years. He collected such things as old farm equipment, old tools an antique tractors. He also loved farming and was well known for his delicious cantaloupes and watermelons and supplied produce to Cooke’s Food Store for many years. At Bowater, he was often called “the watermelon man”. He made his last large garden when he was 85 years old. He was an honest man and you could depend on his word. He loved life and he loved people. He would often tell people, The Lord has blessed me so that I can’t thank Him enough”. He went everywhere he wanted to go and bought everything he wanted to buy. He lived a very healthy life until he was attacked by Alzheimer’s. He was preceded in death by his father, Lenton Clea Moore; his mother, Lillie Mae Cox Moore; his wife of 53 years, Agnes Casteel Moore; two sisters; Gladys Lewis and Virginia Brock; one brother, Milton Moore; and one son-in-law, Eddie Stansell. He is survived by four daughters; Mrs. Louise Kelly and husband, Gerald of Cleveland; Mrs. Jo Stansell of Athens; Mrs. Gail McConnell and husband, David of Ten Mile ; and Mrs. Brenda Eslinger of Cleveland; nine grandchildren: Dr. Wayne Kelly and wife, Britney of Cleveland, Shawn Kelly of Knoxville, Eric Stansell of Nashville, Marcus Stansell of Athens, Monica Howard and husband, Frank of Athens, Keith McConnell and wife, Janet of Hixson, Kevin McConnell and wife, Ashley of Spring City, Chris Myers and wife, Jennifer of Harrison and Candy Reed and husband, James of Cleveland; fourteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ira Lee Fugate of Calhoun and Mrs. Nellie Saffels of Cleveland. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hiwassee Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Sneed officiating. Interment will follow in Calhoun Cemetery with his grandsons serving as pallbearers. His family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and from 1-2 p.m. Tuesday at the church prior to the service.
