James Oscar Cash, Jr.

June 14, 1931 — May 25, 2019

James Oscar Cash, Jr., 87 of Cleveland, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2019, in a local healthcare facility.

He was a combat medic assigned to the 24th Infantry Division in Korea.  He was untruthful about his age in order to enter the U.S. Army at the age of 16.  He was a prisoner of war twice during the Korean Conflict.  After Korea, he returned to another tour of duty to fight in the Vietnam War.  He retired as a first class sergeant.

He was a dedicated Republican who loved to speak his mind.  He was never married and enjoyed his bachelor lifestyle throughout his life.  He loved women, wine, and a good steak.  He never apologized but never missed a moment to tell you how much he loved you.

Like many Veterans, he suffered from PTSD.  In his later years, he required additional care and resided for many years at Garden Plaza and finally at Life Care Nursing Home.  They have taken excellent care of this retired soldier, always showing him the respect and care he so deserved.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Oscar Cash and Willie Tennie Mowery Cash; and siblings, Eloise Beaty, Juanita Kelly, Lee Long, Dennis Cash, and Jeneva Sis Young.

He is survived by his caregivers, cousin Christy Goza and nephew Bobby Young.  He is also survived by his nieces, Janie Potter, Gayle Whitley, Judy Durham, and Juanel Mantooth, along with many great nieces, nephews, and cousins that he loved dearly.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Chattanooga National Funeral Cemetery with Rev. Jim Durham officiating.  Greg Akers, David Potter, Steve Cross, Jay Goza, Greg Hutchins, and Robert Bonini will be serving as pallbearers.  Military honors, a white dove release ceremony, and the playing of bagpipes will conclude the service.

We invite you to send a message of condolence and view the Cash family guestbook at www.ralphbuckner.com.

Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
